Forum: etree Subject: Upload info?

I'm not clear on just what is meant by the following upload data fields: ID, Source, and Lineage. For ID I've been using the conventional folder name without the shnf extension, e.g. cj2002-06-16. For Source I've been listing just AUD, FM, or the like, and under lineage giving a simple list of generations, such as AUD > DAT > CDR > EAC > shn. That dialog box seems to small for full details (e.g. type of equipment), which I include in the Details box. Is there a standard?

Forum: etree Subject: ah yes, meta-data ....

I like to think of "source" as a direct line from source (mics, sbd, etc) through pre-amp, a/d to the recording media whether that is DAT, JB3, laptop, etc. Then the "lineage" is anything after that required to transfer/convert the original to loseless format (SHN, APE, FLAC). For instance a DAT transfer to AUDIO CDR then DAE to SHN or a DAT transfer to SHN or what have you. A laptop recording, therefore, typically does not have lineage because it goes from mics > ... > encoded loseless format. -- or so that is how I am admin'ing it for the kimock community.

A couple of other points --- the textboxes on the import form are not limited by the size you see -- you can enter more data it scrolls as needed.

Also, I tend to exclude stuff like cables, mastering settings and some other stuff from the meta-data, after all that field, to me anyway, should be a shorthand for the detailed information (hopefully) contained in the info file. Of course then there are those cases were the info in the info file is very minimal. In these cases I like to add stuff like DAT > ? > AUDIO CDR > ? > SHN to emphasize that the info is not known via the meta-data.

hope all this helps.

Hmmm, it's a bug that you're allowed to modify the ID field. I'll take care of that. Changing it will definitely mess things up.

For most of the recordings I've seen, "source" is the recording equipment (mics, preamp, a/d, deck) while "lineage" is the conversion process (deck, cables, sound card, audio programs). I agree that the labels are a little odd...
